Our Mission
To recognize, stimulate, and provide financial support for projects and activities that have high potential for advancing peace education in Puget Sound communities.

Overview
The Abe Keller Peace Education Fund was organized in 1998 to address peace-education needs in the Puget Sound community through fund-raising and grant-making for worthy peace-education activities. There are many worthy individuals and organizations in the region who are working on some aspect of peace education, but appropriate assistance does not currently exist. Peace education work is intensely interactive, and it flourishes when there is a sense of energy and empowerment within a community.  The Fund aims to increase community engagement with peace issues by providing resources and recognition to promising peace-education endeavors.

Scope
The potential scope of peace education is enormous, and focus is needed to foster progress in such a large field.  The initial scope of the Abe Keller Peace Education Fund is in two areas that were both close to Abe's heart:  Conflict resolution in our communities, and fostering peace leadership by the United States in international affairs. It is recognized that peace issues and issues of economic, racial, and environmental justice are intimately linked, and the focus of the Fund may shift over time to embrace these other issues as needs and opportunities arise.  The fund does not intend to conduct peace education activities itself but prefers to support the ongoing work of other organizations.  It intends to contribute to activities that are promising but not yet self-sustaining.

Fund Organization and Leadership

Sources and uses of funds
The Fund will obtain revenue from charitable contributions and proceeds from fund-raising events.  For the foreseeable future, the fund will function as an all-volunteer organization.

All contributions are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Our Grant-Making Policies
Any individual or group engaged in applicable peace-making activities may seek financial support from the Abe Keller Peace Education Fund.  Letters of inquiry describing a proposed project may be submitted to the Fund.  If the proposal meets the criteria of the Fund's Grant Application Guidelines, the individual or group may then be invited to submit an application. Only invited proposals will be evaluated for further consideration. Efforts will be made to approve grants for a broad range of public and private schools, businesses, labor organizations, and community groups.

Our policies on funding peace education are intended to reflect the ideals associated with the life and legacy of Abe Keller.

Examples of Possible Projects
The ideas listed below illustrate (but are not limited to) the types of peace education activities that will be considered for support.

  • Curriculum development stressing alternatives to violence
  • Peace education in the religious community
  • Community education projects (e.g., Ground Zero Community, Hiroshima and Nagasaki Days)

Abe Keller Peace Education Award
In addition to providing grants, the Fund will make an annual award, the Abe Keller Peace Education Award, to an individual or group deemed to be making a truly significant contribution to peace education in the Puget Sound region.  The award is intended to recognize the work of the recipient, to bring the work to the attention of the broader community, and to include a monetary prize that can assist the recipient further peace education efforts in the region.
